FAQ
Straight answers
The questions we get on nearly every call, answered the way we'd answer them in person.
How do you price what you buy?
Everything starts from live spot. We weigh your items on a calibrated scale, verify purity, calculate the melt value in front of you, and make an offer at a disclosed percentage of that number. Collectible coins get assessed for numismatic value on top of metal content — a common-date Morgan and a key-date Morgan are very different conversations.
Do I need an appointment?
Yes — by appointment only, across Greater Boston, with evening and weekend slots. Call or use the contact form; we typically respond the same day.
Do I need to bring ID?
Yes. Massachusetts requires photo ID for precious metals transactions. Every legitimate dealer will ask for it. If a buyer doesn't, that tells you something about how they operate.
Should I clean my coins first?
No — please don't. Cleaning permanently reduces collectible value, and dealers can spot a cleaned coin immediately. As-is, always.
What's "junk silver"?
Pre-1965 U.S. dimes, quarters, and halves are 90% silver with no collector premium on common dates — that's all "junk" means. Every $1 of face value holds roughly 0.715 troy oz of silver, and pricing runs off that melt value against live spot.
Do you do appraisals?
Yes — verbal appraisals are free and carry no obligation to sell. We'll go through the collection with you, identify what's numismatic versus melt material, and give you honest numbers against the live market. For estate purchases we provide itemized documentation of everything we buy. If you need a formal written appraisal for probate or insurance purposes, tell us up front and we'll discuss whether we're the right fit or refer you.
How do you pay?
Cash, check, wire transfer, or cryptocurrency — whatever works best for you. Cash transactions over $10,000 require standard federal reporting (Form 8300), same as any dealer, and we'll walk you through anything unusual before you commit.
Am I obligated to sell after a quote?
No. Evaluations are free and no-obligation. If our number doesn't work for you, you walk with your items and we part on good terms. We'd rather you shop the offer around than feel pressured.
How do you test metal without damaging it?
We use a Sigma Metalytics Precious Metal Verifier — it reads the electrical signature of the metal itself, through slabs, capsules, and flips. No acid, no scratch testing, no drilling. Your graded coins stay in their holders and your bullion stays mark-free, which matters if you decide not to sell.
Do you handle estates and large collections?
That's our specialty. We travel throughout New England for estate and wholesale lots, go through everything piece by piece, and separate numismatic material from melt material so each gets priced on its merits. For executors and attorneys, we provide itemized purchase documentation for the estate file. One visit, discreet, everything evaluated — including what you assume is worthless.
Will you come to me?
For estates, larger lots, and wholesale quantities — yes, anywhere in New England. For smaller transactions we'll arrange a convenient meeting point in the Greater Boston / MetroWest area. We're based in Dover, MA.
How do you compare to mailing my gold in?
Mail-in buyers quote after your metal is already in their hands, which is exactly the wrong order. With us, nothing leaves your sight: the weighing, the testing, and the offer all happen in front of you, and payment is immediate.
